How to Clean and Reuse Candle Jars | Harlequin Candles

Finished your favourite Harlequin candle? Your candle jar does not have to go to waste.

Our candles are hand-poured in small batches and finished in simple glass jars that can be cleaned and reused around the home. With a little care, your empty jar can become a useful holder for everyday bits and pieces.

Before reusing your jar, make sure all leftover wax, the wick tab and the label have been removed properly.

1. Remove the Leftover Wax

Start by removing any wax left at the bottom of the jar.

The easiest method is to place the jar in the freezer for a few hours. Once the wax has hardened, it should shrink slightly and lift out more easily. You can gently loosen it with a butter knife if needed.

You can also soften the wax with warm water or a hair dryer, then carefully scoop it out.

Important: Never pour melted wax down the sink, as it can clog your pipes.

2. Remove the Wick Tab

Once the wax has been removed, you may still see the small metal wick tab at the bottom of the jar.

Gently lift it using a butter knife or pliers. Take your time and avoid using too much force, especially if you are working with glass.

If there is any sticky residue left behind, wash it away with warm soapy water.

3. Remove the Label

For a clean, simple look, remove the candle label before reusing the jar.

Soak the jar in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, then gently peel the label away. If any residue remains, rub a small amount of cooking oil or olive oil over the sticky area, then wash with warm soapy water.

A plastic scraper or your fingers can help remove any stubborn spots without scratching the jar.

4. Wash and Dry the Jar

Once the wax, wick tab and label are gone, give your jar a final clean.

Wash it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then rinse well and let it air dry completely.

Avoid pouring boiling water into a cold glass jar, as sudden temperature changes may crack the glass.

5. Simple Ways to Reuse Your Candle Jar

Once clean and dry, your empty candle jar can be reused in plenty of simple ways around the home.

Try using it for:

  • cotton pads in the bathroom
  • makeup brushes
  • pens or pencils on your desk
  • hair ties or clips
  • small craft supplies
  • bedside trinkets
  • spare buttons or sewing bits
  • a tealight holder

Your jar can be practical, pretty and useful long after the candle has finished.

Before You Reuse It

We recommend reusing your candle jar for decorative or household storage purposes.

Avoid using it for food, drinks or anything heat-sensitive. Candle jars are designed for candles first, so it is best to keep their second life simple and practical.
